2026 Hawaii Ranch Rodeo - February 14 & 15

Presented by Hawaii Cowboy Church Ministries and Rowdy Rodeo

This faith-based initiative is aimed at bringing families together, sharing the love of Christ, and encouraging our community through friendly competition and fellowship.  This family-friendly, action-packed weekend celebrates our Paniolo heritage, showcasing horsemanship, rodeo competition, and ranching culture.

Rules:

RANCH RODEO RULES

All rules will be reviewed just before each event.

1. All judges’ calls are FINAL.  You can ask questions before you run your event.  In all events, there will be no loping in the herd.  Once cow is cut from the herd, you may lope to bring it out. Only one team member across the line at any time unless stated.

2. In case of a tie, the team with the fastest time in team branding will be awarded the win.  In case of a two- time tie, a coin will be tossed.

3. Absolutely no rough house of any animal at any time.  All horses and cattle will be respected.  

TEAM BRANDING (branding pen)

Objective. Rope and “brand” two calves.  

  1. Calves in the branding pen.  Announcer will call out two numbers. Team must brand those two calves in any order.
  2. One roper on horseback in the pen. Time starts when they enter the pen.  
  3. Must drag the calf out of the pen by two back legs. No other calves may leave the pen.
  4. Flankers cannot touch the calf until it is entirely out of the pen.
  5. The calf must be branded on the left side rib. Brander cannot leave the bucket until the calf is on the ground with a flanker.
  6. Second roper cannot start until the first calf is branded and the rope is off.  1st roper cannot rope again. 
  7. Brander must return the brand to the bucket after each calf.   Time will stop when the branding iron is returned to the bucket on the second calf. 
  8. 3-minute time limit. At the end of the time, all calves will be returned to the pen.

TEAM DOCTORING - Rope and “doctor” one calf 

  1. Announcer will call out your number.
  2. Only 1 rider across the line.
  3. Time starts when rider crosses the line. 
  4. Yearling must be sorted out, driven across the line, then roped - head and heel. Neck rope taken off and put on both front feet.
  5. Chalk the neck, call for time.
  6. Cannot rope until over the line.
  7. Cannot be chalked in the neck until all 4 legs are in ropes.
  8. No other stock can cross the line.
  9. 3-min time limit.

RANCH CASTRATION (branding pen)

  1. Calves in the branding pen. 
  2. Announcer calls number, 1 roper enters the pen, timer starts
  3. Roper will catch the number by both hind legs and drag out of the pen.
  4. Team must get another rope on front legs, drop the calf and stretch.
  5. Cannot chalk under the belly until 4 legs in ropes. All other cattle must stay in the pen.
  6. 3-minute time limit

TEAM SORTING, sort out 3 cattle in order

  1. All team members can be horseback
  2. Announcer will call out your number, time starts when the rider crosses the line.
  3. Only 1 team member across the line in the herd at any given time. More than 1 across the line results in a DQ.
  4. Starting with that number, three animals must be sorted across the line in numerical order
  5. If you break sequence or if a sorted animal crosses back over the line, team must regather and start over.
  6. 3-minute time limit.

RELAY RACE

  1. Trailer with 5 saddled horses in the arena.
  2. 1 rider at a time, unload, mount and run around the course.
  3. Rider returns to trailer and tag next rider, who then unloads, mounts and runs the course.
  4. After all have run, reload all horses and close trailer door for time.  
  5. If any team members do not have a horse, they must run on foot from the trailer, around two cones and back to tag next rider/runner.

TRAILER LOADING - Rope and load a cow and two horses

  1. All riders can be on horseback. Announcer will call out cow #.  No loping in the herd but once the cow is cut out from the herd you may lope behind the line.
  2. First rider to catch cow must haze cow to trailer.  Everyone else must help get the cow in the trailer.  
  3. Cow cannot be dragged until 10 feet of the trailer.
  4. Once loaded, 2 horses must be loaded, one of them being the horse that caught the cow and trailer door shut and latched.  
  5. All five contestants will then need to be in the pickup with all doors closed, time will stop at that point. 
  6. 3-minute time limit.

RANCH SADDLE BRONC This is a stand-alone event, not counted towards the score in the rodeo

1. Judges will score up to 50 for the horse and up to 50 for the rider. Then averaged

2. Rider must ride for 8 seconds to be a qualified ride

3. Must use a working cowboy saddle 

SIDE NOTE

SCORING

Each event each team will receive a score.  The fastest team in the event receives the highest number up to the number of teams.  If 10 teams are participating for example, then 1st place team gets a 10, 2nd place team a 9 and so on.  If you do not get a time in an event, you will receive a 0.  At the end of the night, we will total up your teams score and the team with the highest score wins 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd.  Any questions please ask ahead of time.  

COWBOY ATTIRE

Collared western or aloha shirts or ranch rodeo shirts are required with western cowboy hats

Time Limit: 30 seconds

Catch Pen gate: open

Bell-collar catch

Barrier penalty: 10 sec

Barrier length: 8 ft

Eye start

Time stops when rope flag flies off the ssaddle
